Profile and Personal Reflections

Sumantra Ghoshal is Chair of Strategic Leadership at London Business School. He was once named by The Economist as "Euro Guru." His main co-author is Prof. Christopher Bartlett of Harvard Business School, although he has published a number of books with others, including Nitin Nohria.

I first saw Ghoshal perform in public at a session run by the Careers Research Forum, in 1976. His description of the transformation of ABB, and its approach to the challenge of global leadership, ultimately provided much of the input to The Individualized Corporation. I later arranged for him to share his thoughts with a group of senior managers in National Power. One of his oft quoted and evocative concepts is what he calls "the smell of the place" - the organisational climate. Too many organisations, he argues, have created the oppressive, energy-sapping environment of downtown Calcutta in summer. Instead, he calls upon them to transform their organizations into the invigorating and inspiring equivalent of a Fontainbleau forest in spring!

Managing Across Borders: The Transnational Solution

This was Ghoshal and Bartlett's first book, published in 1989; although the edition included below was fully revised and updated in 1998. Besides their analysis of the challenges of, and potential solution to, globalisation, the book includes an "Application Handbook," designed to help managers think through their own situations.

The book has been listed as one of the fifty most influential management books of the 20th Century.

The Individualized Corporation

Here, Ghoshal and Bartlett develop the 'Fontainbleau forest in spring' theme (see above) by arguing for managers to move beyond thinking in terms of strategy, structure and systems, and to view their organisations instead in terms of purpose, process and people. They call upon managers to focus on developing their individuals' unique talents and skills.
The book provides a mixture of 'case study' material, new models and practical suggestions for moving organisations towards their ideal of an Individualized Corporation.

The book is easy to read and informative. It won the Igor Ansoff Award in 1997.
