Profile and Personal Reflections

Betty EdwardsGareth Morgan is Distinguished Research Professor at the Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto.
He is a writer and management consultant, who places particular emphasis on the use of metaphor to understand the dynamics of organisations and the challenges of change.

I first saw Morgan in action at a full-day session of the Independent Change Management Forum in 1997, in which he explored various aspects of metaphor, paradox and organisational change. This reinforced my attraction to the use of metaphor and analogy as language and thinking tools. His discussion of the paradoxical nature of organisations sparked my current interest in this important, but under-explored aspect of organisational dynamics.

Images of Organization

Morgan introduces and explores eight metaphors of organisation which provide new, and sometimes provocative, insights into the ways in which organisations operate and change.

These include viewing organisations as: machines, organisms, brains, cultures, political systems, psychic prisons, flux and transformation, and instruments of domination. He also discusses the nature of metaphor as a thinking tool and shows how these can be used to diagnose organisational issues and identify ways of intervening.

Imaginization

Here, Morgan shows how people's capacity for imagination can be used do develop and explore innovative ways of organising and managing. Morgan suggests that "imaginization" is about:

  • improving our abilities to see and understand situations in new ways

  • finding new images for new ways of organizing

  • creating shared understandings

  • personal empowerment

  • developing capacities for continuous self-organisation.
