Profile and Personal Reflections

Betty EdwardsBetty Edwards is Professor Emeritus of Art at California State University.
She is a writer and management consultant, whose first book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, uses insights into the functioning of the brain to teach people how to draw. However, as the Los Angeles Times has pointed out: "Not only is [it] a book about drawing, it is a book about living. . . . It emancipates."

Edwards' books - especially her first - are aimed primarily at learning how to draw; and they are worth exploring from that perspective alone. However, we have also found them useful as a source of metaphor for important aspects of organisational dynamics, which is why the books are included here.

The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

This is a fully revised and updated edition of Edwards' first book, in which introduces a number of concepts and techniques aimed at helping people to 'see' the world differently and hence to draw it more accurately. Her central premise is that, trapped by the rational, logical, analytic, linear and culturally-honed characteristics of the left brain, we are prevented from developing and expoiting the non-rational, intuitive, synthetic, holistic and culturally-suppressed skills of the right brain.

As a result, we are unable to see, in a way which would enable our inherent drawing abilities to surface and flourish. Edwards then introduces a number of techhniques designed to overcome these mental blockages.

The techniques certainly work as drawing aids; but the concepts she introduces, such as the use of "negative space," have provided me with some useful metaphors for important aspects of organisational dynamics.

Drawing on the Artist Within

In Edwards' second book, she extends her ideas into the areas of creativity and innovation. Whilst these subjects are directly relevant to organizations, her approach continues to provide a rich source of metaphor for a view of organizational dynamics that questions the mechanistic assumptions of many of today's fads and fashions.

Chapter headings such as Drawing Meaning from the Inside Out, Drawing on the Other Side of Our Assumptions and Shadows that Light the Way provide examples of this line of thinking.
